A Series Of Unfortunate Events centers on the recently-orphaned Baudelaire children: Violet, 14, the elder sister; Klaus, “a little older than 12”, her younger brother; and Sunny, the baby. As they are passed from relative to family friend to boarding school and so forth, they begin to unravel their parents’ secrets and are pursued by the evil Count Olaf, who is after their family fortune.
The next day Poe takes them to their new guardian: Count Olaf, an actor who lives in a dilapidated Halloween mansion. We see in episode 2 a flashback about how Count Olaf convinced Mr. Poe that the children were meant to go to him, though I’ve really got to lay the blame at the parents’ door for not naming names and being more explicit in the will. Count Olaf believes that he will be able to get access to the Baudelaire fortune by being the children’s guardian, but the money cannot legally be touched until Violet comes of age. (Lots of wills have provisions about money not going to heirs until they are 21 or 25 so the kids could have been older, just sayin’.)
For some reason, once it is over, Olaf announces to the entire audience what really happened and why he did it. He says he is in “complete control of the Baudelaire’s entire fortune.” It’s not clear why the entire fortune was left to Violet and not to be split evenly between the three children, but it does carry an interesting implication about how their parents’ viewed the siblings’ relationship. Did they just assume Klaus would remain with Violet and that they in turn would take care of Sunny? Seems like it.
