There’s no ageism in that statement, by the way. To explain, the film opens with a 67–year-old seamstress, Inge (Ursula Werner), taking a pair of trousers to the apartment of Karl (Horst Westphal), a customer in his 70s. Trousers are delivered, but then every article of clothing starts coming off as Inge and Karl enjoy a carnal romp. These and a couple of other such audacious scenes have a raw honesty about them that is embarrassing neither to participant nor viewer. Director Andreas Dresen’s camera work is candid but spare and matter of fact. When Inge looks at her nude body in a mirror, you can appreciate the lingering feelings of desire and longing. And brief scenes of Inge and Karl relaxing and laughing in each other’s close proximity company seem real and quite poignant. But don’t expect a lot of happiness on this “Cloud 9.” For a problem exists for the dynamics of the relationship, as well, it turns out, for the film at-large.
