Mandy definitely won't be everyone's cup of tea, but it certainly is mine. Diane Morgan has let her imagination run wild and the results are hilarious. The humour is absurd and, in my opinion, very northern. The cameos are great and I enjoyed the snappy 15 minute episodes. I've knocked a point off as there's a little bit of inconsistency, and the occasional episode that doesn't quite live up to the others.I strongly disagree with some of the other reviews that implied Mandy is looking down on the working classes. On the contrary, I was rooting for Mandy throughout. She's a loveable wrong 'un.
This memoir is honest, heartbreaking, and beautiful. Mandy openly shares her very intimate journey of loss and complicated relationships with family. Her experience with looking inward, experiencing therapy and workshops, and finding ways to help others as a way to redeem herself and the lies she tells herself is also helpful and refreshing for anyone who has struggled to find the best ways to grow, grieve, and move forward. A well-written, quick read.
I just finished this book this morning. My mother heard about it first and read it right before I did. She said it was hard to get through but very worth it. And she was right. With my own history of loss at an early, it was a hard read. But Mandy wrote very honestly about her losing her mother and a lot of her thought process followed mine at the loss of my father. The set up in how she goes from present to past in alternating chapters is well laid out and easy to follow. Talking about her trying different therapists is very interesting and I think is a good conversation to have. Her struggle to find someone that she can connect to is very relatable. I appreciate the detail of all that she went through with her various losses. This was very well written, and I will be recommending to others.
