After two summer postponements due to Covid-19, Her Majesty Lady Gaga, the American singer who took the dance-pop crown from Madonna in the late 2000s, was finally able to take possession of the Stade de France (Saint-Denis). This third attempt seems to have succeeded, as she delivered a sold-out show on Sunday, July 24.
A woman of extremes, Lady Gaga was not impressed by the sheer size of the venue when she first played in France in 2012. Her two concerts at the Accor Arena (formerly Paris-Bercy) in 2018 had to be canceled due to a hospitalization related to fibromyalgia. The "Little Monsters" have therefore not seen the pop queen in France – which, for her, means the capital – since her 2014 show at the Accor Arena.
To her credit, the 36-years-old Stefani Germanotta has not yet surrendered herself to the nostalgia of her repertoire. And what could seem repetitive when listening to the record was no longer repetitive on stage thanks to what can only be described as a full-blown production. It included no fewer than 19 dancers (to surround, carry or undress the evening's queen); five musicians (including guitarists who seemed to have come straight out of Hellfest); video projections; and of course, endless costume changes. As for the set, Lady Gaga wanted it to be a tribute to brutalist architecture. As a result, this very hefty structure is reserved for a summer stadium tour and is being rolled out in only five European cities.
